SMS, MMS, and RCS
TracsConnect keeps the message editor simple, but knowing the difference between message types helps when something isn’t working.
| Type | What it means in the shop |
|---|---|
| SMS | A normal text message. Best for short updates, reminders, and links. |
| MMS | A text message with a photo attached. Use it when a picture of the damage or the work helps the customer understand what’s going on. |
| RCS | A richer messaging experience — can do extras like tap-to-reply buttons, if the customer’s phone and your phone service both support it. |
How TracsConnect handles this
Section titled “How TracsConnect handles this”TracsConnect picks SMS by default. If you attach a photo, it automatically switches to MMS — but only if your phone service supports it. If it doesn’t, the image icon won’t show up in the editor at all.
RCS is a separate capability. If your phone service has it enabled, you’ll see an “RCS available” note at the bottom of the editor. RCS isn’t automatically used the way MMS is — it surfaces additional features (like quick-reply buttons in shop reports) when available.
If a feature isn’t showing in the editor, that means your current phone service doesn’t support it for that conversation.
Practical guidance
Section titled “Practical guidance”Use SMS for most messages. Use MMS when a photo makes the message genuinely clearer — not just as a habit. RCS extras show up automatically when they’re available; you don’t need to do anything special.
